Artist Statement
My imagery deals with damaged people, both physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Some figures try to disguise their appearance with masks or decoration; their fragility is revealed through the transparency of their bodies. Much of my work has ties to experiences in my life. I approach my work intuitively and emotionally without a great deal of superimposed concepts or statements inhibiting the process of drawing with color. I believe that personal expression is an essential part of art and the universality of an artwork and is one element that compels the viewer to revisit a piece. I want the viewer to make their own interpretations and through this they will complete the work. The meanings to my work becomes more apparent to me as the piece progresses. My preferred material is pastel, with white oil pastel on oversized watercolor paper. Pastel enables me to use the material as a drawing and painting tool at the same time. I am using pure color that becomes an extension of my hand. At times I add white oil pastel to the soft pastel to change their character and enable the material to move in a more painterly manner. Pastels allow me to leave my under drawing visible, or create ghosts of images in my work as I build up layers. |
